MAIN MIGRANT POPULATION (2020)

Healthcare rights of migrants

Asylum seekers: Have full access to the public health care system. They are entitled to the same level of health care as nationals, including access to specialised treatment for persons who have suffered torture, severe physical or psychological abuses or traumatising circumstances.

Refugees: Are entitled to the same health care rights as nationals.

Undocumented migrants: Are covered by the national health service if they are registered as residents of the municipality. However, they can only access emergency, maternity and pediatric care, although many Spanish doctors and nurses continue to treat them. Undocumented migrants are required to reimburse 40% of the cost of medicines prescribed to them.

HIV testing and treatment

Testing: Testing is free in certain places, mainly in medium to large cities. Access is limited in rural areas. Use the European test finder to see where you can get tested for HIV.

Treatment: Treatment is free for all, although access is limited for those that are undocumented.
