طالبو اللجوء Upon arrival asylum seekers undergo free medical examinations to see if they have any contagious diseases that require treatment. They are also entitled to free perinatal and postnatal care, as well as mental health treatment from social workers, psychiatrists and psychologists. Asylum seekers who obtain a work permit have the same requirements as legal migrants, which means that they have to purchase health insurance during the first six months of residence, after which they can become insured by the national health insurance. For imprisoned asylum seekers, they have the right to emergency health care in cases of sudden illness or accident.
اللاجئون: Upon arrival in Iceland, all refugees undergo a medical check-up. Medical and dental care is provided as required, free of charge, during the first six months of residence in Iceland. After six months, refugees have the same access to the health system as Icelandic citizens. Psychological assistance is provided for a longer time free of charge.
المهاجرون غير الموثقين: Are not covered by the regular state health insurance system. Nevertheless, they are entitled to receive emergency health care in case of sudden illness or accident. They are expected to pay for the emergency care provided, but if they are unable to do so, the cost will fall on the service provider. Undocumented migrants cannot purchase private health insurance.
